It’s safe to say that you love color. Your Pantone series is about to reach its one year mark. These small paintings pack a punch of delight and are never boring to look at. Do you plan to continue growing your Pantone series?

Justin: Thank you, I do plan on painting more Pantone cards just not everyday. It is hard to believe that it has been a year since I started. I am happy I committed to that project. I learned a lot about movement, trusting myself, and color.

The abstracted landscapes from your Reflections series are...

At the end of 2021 your work was published in "100 Artists, 100 Poets on Katendrecht" by Art Collective Werklicht. Congratulations on this publication! What was your initial reaction of work being accepted and then finally seeing your work in this book?

Christy: I was thrilled! Firstly, because the original concept was already awesome enough: a window art exhibition during the summer, this enabled many people to see and enjoy all the art and poetry in a coronaproof and safe manner. But then the...

The pieces in your upcoming exhibit are very energized. What was the process like creating this series?

Thyra: To create a new series, I usually have the series name, a color palette, and perhaps even some names for various pieces pre planned. What unifies this series is the energy, movement and dimension. As development of a planned series for this show began, the gallery requested a significant number of large pieces (30” x 40” and larger). With a fixed deadline in place, I needed to adjust my...

Your last series, Winter Intervals, is a calm and colorful journey through the coldest and quietest months of the year. What can your audience expect to see thematically in your next body of work? Or are you taking a different approach to what you might currently be working on?

Calina: During the first months of the current year, I will be delving deeper into the dialogue with the raw materials, acrylic paint in my case. Thinking of color theory, I plan to employ a more methodical approach to the color spectrum, with the goal of creating additional depth through...

In 2021 you had group shows, solo shows, installation projects, and art walks. Looking back, what was your favorite project of the year and what do you hope or plan to do more of this year?

Nancy: I think my favorite project of the year was my Tar Lines Installation, because it was something I had been seeing and thinking about for a long time, and thanks to collaborative effort, was able to make a reality. It was wonderful to see people interacting with the piece, especially after being in lock-down for Covid.  I also really loved the...

What advice would you give to newer artists who are trying to discover their own unique style?

Elise: My advice to newer artists is to trust yourself and do what you are most passionate about with your work. If you get an idea, think it through, and then follow what emerges from that idea. We are so lucky to have access at our fingertips to anything we are curious about; anything we want to learn more about or investigate; and research anything from new subject matter, to new materials to try. I continually switch between and combine encaustic painting, oil painting and printmaking.

Meet Next Level Artist Catherine Nash, Tucson, Arizona

Jan 01, 2021

One-on-One with Catherine Nash, Tucson, Arizona, USA

What is your work about?

Beauty. Serenity. Compassion. Nature. The poetics of landscape. A particular timelessness. The nature of Being. I create art that responds to the natural world, reflecting a spiritual and philosophical relationship with the environment. The terrain, aesthetics and cultures of Japan, memories of the rich gradations and spaciousness of Scandinavian summer night skies, my experiences with Native American friends and explorations of the southwestern desert wilderness: these are my influences and what informs my artwork.

Do you have a studio routine, strategy or ritual that helps you get in the creative zone?

I work best with a deadline. If I don’t have a show or a gallery deadline, I impose it upon myself. I always leave something to finish the next day.

How has the pandemic affected your art practice?

I have been 100% unemployed since mid March. My gallery...
