Unlocking Art Opportunities Through Curator Relationships

By Sergio Gomez

How can artists benefit from staying in touch with curators and art professionals?

Today, I want to share something near and dear to my heart—the art of staying connected with curators. You see, I've been on both sides of the spectrum. As an artist, I've had my work featured in numerous shows, and as a curator, I've organized over 100 exhibitions. And let me tell you, the power of maintaining those curator relationships is often underestimated.

A Missed Opportunity

Do you ever wonder how many doors could open if you simply stayed in touch with the curators who showcased your art? It's a question that has crossed my mind countless times. Throughout my curatorial career, I've been astounded by the number of artists who don't seize this opportunity. So, let's change that narrative and unlock the potential for future collaborations and exhibitions.

The Magic of Staying in Touch

Now, you might be wondering, "How do I actually stay connected?" Don't worry—I've got your back. Here's a simple list of actions you can take after a show:

  1. Add Curators to Your Email List
First things first, always ask the curator if they'd like to be added to your email list. It's crucial to seek their consent before including them. This way, you can keep them updated on your artistic journey and future endeavors. Send a Heartfelt Thank You
  2. Gratitude goes a long way.
Take a moment to craft a sincere thank-you email to the curator. Express your appreciation for their support and belief in your artistic vision. Trust me, this small gesture will make you stand out.
  3. Share Your New Work
When you have a fresh body of work ready to be unveiled, don't hesitate to reach out to the curator. Send them an email with a couple of samples and a link to your portfolio or website. Show them how you've evolved and grown as an artist. This way, you keep them engaged and excited about your artistic journey.
  4. Connect on Instagram
In this digital age, social media plays a significant role in building relationships. Give the curator a follow on Instagram and send them a friendly direct message (DM). Take a moment to acknowledge their support for artists and let them know you appreciate their contributions. By doing so, you establish a connection that the algorithm recognizes, ensuring your posts are showcased to them.
  5. Embrace Snail Mail
Remember the charm of receiving physical mail? Take advantage of that nostalgic touch by sending the curator a postcard once a year or so. It's a tangible reminder of your existence as an artist. Personalize it, add a thoughtful note, and let them know you value the relationship you've built.
  6. Engage on Instagram
Lastly, don't forget to engage with the curator's Instagram posts. Leave genuine comments, show your support, and let them know you're paying attention. It's a subtle way to stay on their radar and maintain a connection.

The Power of Authenticity

It's essential to approach these actions with authenticity and a genuine desire to connect. Avoid being intrusive or overly promotional. Instead, focus on building relationships and fostering a sense of camaraderie with curators, gallery owners, and show jurors. Your authenticity will shine through, leaving a lasting impression.

I encourage you to give these strategies a try. Take that extra step to stay connected and nurture those relationships. You never know what opportunities lie ahead.
